How Obese Dads Affect Their Daughters’ Health

A Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center study reveals that the daughters of overweight dads have higher cancer risk and have altered breast tissue.

Obese male mice and normal weight female mice produce overweight female pups at birth through childhood. These female pups have delayed development of their breast tissue. Also, they have high rates of breast cancer. These findings were collected from one of the first animal studies to investigate the effect of paternal obesity on the cancer risk of the future generations.

According to the researchers, they discovered evidence that can prove how obesity can change the microRNA (miRNA) signature in both the father’s sperm and the breast tissue of the daughters. The miRNA signature is the gene expression’s epigenetic regulators. Their study suggests that miRNAs might transmit the epigenetic data from the obese fathers to their daughters.

The findings were published online in the Scientific Reports’ June 24 issue. The Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers reported that the miRNAs that they were able to identify, regulate insulin receptor signalling, which is connected to the changes in the body weight, and other molecular pathways that are linked to the development of cancer like the hypoxia signalling pathway.

Obesity is a type of condition where an individual has accumulated so much body fat that may cause negative effects on their health. If the body weight of an individual is at least 20% higher than it should be, he is then considered as an obese. If his Body Mass Index or BMI is between 25 and 29.9 you belong to the overweight group. If the BMI is 30 or over, you are obese.

The global incidence of obesity has increased significantly over the past decades. Technologic, economic, and lifestyle changes have made a large quantity of inexpensive, high-calorie food with minimal physical activity. People are now eating more and moving so little. There are facts that could explain the metabolic dysregulation among obese people that has been associated with various potential environmental factors like contaminants from present industry.

The rising maternal obesity rate provides a huge challenge to obstetric practice. This can lead to negative effects for both women and fetuses. The maternal risks during pregnancy include preeclampsia and diabetes. The fetus is at high risk of stillbirth and some congenital anomalies. Also, obesity during pregnancy can have an effect on the health later in life for both the mom and the child. The risks include hypertension and heart disease for women. Obesity and heart disease are the possible risks that kids will be facing in the future. Both moms and their children are at higher risk for diabetes. Many obstetrician-gynecologists are working hard to help prevent and address this epidemic.

Obesity is expected to remain foreseeable in the future. Maternal health can impact the utero environment, thus, on the development of the fetus and the child’s health later in life. Health experts are alarmed and are working double time to address this problem.

This condition seems to sometimes run in families as well as some breast cancers. Maternal obesity is said to impact both conditions in humans. This type of obesity refers to a woman during her pregnancy. ON the other hand, paternal obesity refers to the type of obesity of either mother or father during pregnancy. Both types of obesities have the significant impact on the metabolism and offspring development. A woman who is overweight, while pregnant can produce bigger babies, who may have a higher risk of breast cancer later in life.

In the past, the focus has been more on the maternal side. Only a few, if any research has examined the impact of the father’s overweight and obesity on the cancer risk of his offspring.

The Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center study provides proof that, in animals, the body weight of a father at the period of conception influences both their daughter’s body weight both at birth and in the childhood and their breast cancer risk in the future. This is according to Dr. Sonia de Assis, is the lead investigator of the study. She is also an assistant professor at Georgetown Lombardi.

Of course, their study was performed in mice, but it recapitulates latest findings in humans, which illustrate that obese men have important epigenetic alterations in their sperm compared to healthy and lean men.

Their animal study says that those epigenetic alterations in sperm may have impacts for the next generation’s cancer risk.

Dr. de Assis mentions that their next step in the research is to investigate if the same associations can be connected between human dads who are overweight at the risk of breast cancer among their daughters. She added that until they know about this connection with men, they would stick to what they identify is a great piece of advice. Both men and women must keep on trying their best to have a well-balanced diet, sustain a healthy body weight, and live a healthy lifestyle.

These practices will not only benefit everyone, but it could also possibly lead to much happier and healthier kids, whether people plan on getting pregnant in the future or not. Prevention is the key to success when it comes to routines and health and is very hard to break once those strong habits are already formed.

The Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center team plans to conduct more studies to get more direct answers about the human consequences of dads being overweight during the conception on their unborn kids.

It is possible that they may study and test other animals and gather a better concept as to how these alterations happen and if there are other ways that technology can carry out changing the potential results. There might be other genes that lower the risk for cancer, even if the who must have a bigger risk.

It is very crucial to take steps to deal with obesity because it can cause obvious physical changes. Furthermore, it leads to a number of severe and probably serious conditions like coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and breast cancer.

In addition, obesity can affect your quality of life and cause to psychological problems like low self-esteem and depression.

Are Juice Cleanse Diets Nothing But A Dangerous Trend?

Lately, diet crazes like South Beach, Paleo Diet, Dukan Diet, and Atkins have become less popular in the world of fitness and health. It appears that a new fad is taking away their spots – the juice cleanse diets.

Essentially, juicing is the method of extracting the juice from whole vegetables and fruits. Most people prefer to use this to detoxify their bodies or lose weight. Although it may sound clean and healthy, but the cynicism happens when an individual is living off solely with juice without whole foods.

There are people who are resentful of the idea that these juices are really dangerous nonsense. Others do it for the sake of terms like “purify” and “cleanse.” A few believe that it’s not helping the liver in any way possible. Interestingly, all of them have the right stand regarding the issue.

However, experts have different views when it comes to juicing but there are ideas that they mostly agree on. Can juicing really detoxify all your impurities?

Until these days, there’s no real and solid proof that juicing is a miraculous cure-all. Dr. John Buse is wondering why a person would commit himself to a juice cleanse. As the Division of Endocrinology Chief of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he sees very small evidence that this practice does anything good for a person.

People must understand that juice cleanse diet won’t relieve the body of contaminants or toxins. This task is systematically done by the liver, intestines, and kidneys. Dr. Eric Ravussin said he don’t like the promotion around cleansing juices. He works at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center as the Executive Director for Clinical Science. Dr. Ravussin added that he does not buy the idea that these juices can detox and flush away all the toxins. For him, it’s nothing but pure marketing.

Nevertheless, there is little evidence proving that it is the worst thing in this world. For as long as you keep this diet short and you do not have underlying health issues, it cannot cause anything bad to you. For Dr. Buse, if you feel better when you follow a juice cleanse for a few days, as a physician, he won’t debate over it. But he cannot guarantee that you will get loads of benefits.

There is one big warning here: If you have suffered from an eating disorder in the past or concern that your eating habits are causing harm to your mental or physical health, you must stay away from diet fads like this one. Consider seeing your doctor and discuss things if you are contemplating on making any huge change to your eating habits.

Do not expect that juice cleansing will act like an OxiClean inside your body. Consider this, if you only drink fruit juice, you will be drinking lots of sugar. When you drink this juice, your pancreas produces more insulin to help your body handle all that extra amount of sugar. Also, it can raise the blood sugar levels. This is due to the extra sugar and because you lack other macronutrients like protein and fiber.

If an individual reacts poorly to blood sugar fluctuations, he will potentially experience the highs and lows of blood sugar levels. But, there is also a chance that you may not experience any undesirable effects. Everyone is unique, and most of us do not have any obvious responses to consuming lots of sugar.

In nature, the human body detoxifies itself daily. It eradicates and counterbalances toxins through the lungs, colon, liver, kidneys, lymph glands, and skin. Unfortunately, an average human body has a difficult time dealing with environmental toxins of today like air pollutants and hazardous chemicals. When foreign and strange substances go into a body, it will amass them outside of the elimination system. They will start to accumulate in the body fat.

If you just had your European holiday, and you pamper yourself with too much pasta, gelato, or wine, detoxifying for a short period with a juice cleanse diet may help. A normal juice fast takes 1 to 5 days. Still, it is crucial to make sure that the juice cleanse you will have is the right one for you and your body. Some include whole foods in their juice cleanses.

3 Most Popular Juice Cleanse Diets

These are the most common juice cleanse diets of today. If you really are so curious, you can pick any of the following:

  1. The One 3-Day Weekend Juice Cleanse

The One 3-Day Weekend juice cleanse was developed by Joe Cross. He is a documentary filmmaker who began juice cleansing as his way of losing 100 pounds and to  have a better life.

Yet, his suggestion is to include whole foods that are limited to vegetables and fruits, only for dinner. The rest of the 3 days include 5 juices. This consists of juices like Apple Carrot Ginger and the Mean Green, which includes celery, kale, lemon, and cucumbers.

  1. The Blueprint Cleanse

This provides a few different levels of cleanses, depending on your preference and dietary history. Level I – Renovation and is highly recommended for beginner juice cleansers. This includes 6 bottles of juice daily: a combination of fruit juices, green juices, cashew nut milk with cinnamon and vanilla, and lemonade made with agave nectar.

Level II – The Foundation Cleanse is comparable to Level I. However, it is more designed towards individuals who are already oriented to trying out new diets and sustaining a healthy and active lifestyle.

Level III – The Excavation Cleanse is geared for people who are extremely body conscious and already eating clean. This includes less fruit juice and more vegetable juices.

Blueprint is best for people with hectic schedules. The length of cleansing is a personal option.

  1. The 7-Day Juice Cleanse

This juice cleanse is a DIY plan, which demands 4 to 6 juices daily. Every juice should be 16 to 20 ounces. The 7-Day Juice Cleanse includes 13 different vegetables, fruits, ginger root, and garlic.

Warning! This kind of juice cleanse and other cleanses may cause headaches and dizziness, specifically within the first couple of days of the diet because the body is still trying to adapt. While the juices are purely vegetables and fruits, you can add spices like fresh mint, thyme, oregano and chives. This will give a little kick.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Juice Cleanse Diets

Any diet has its share of pros and cons. One may work effectively with you, while others may not. It is important that you read well enough before following any diet plan to avoid any harm.

Advantages

Juice cleanse helps you achieve the suggested dietary consumption of vegetables and fruits. Diets that are loaded with healthy food can lower the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases.

Also, this diet, when combined with daily exercise, has shown to reduce the levels of cholesterol.

Fruit cleanse diet enhances spirituality. Almost every religion has some sort of fasting ritual like Lent, Ramadan, and Yom Kippur. Fasting is a crucial element of health care in Chinese medicine.

Disadvantages

Sadly, there is little evidence that supports the beneficial claims of fruit juice cleanse diet. No concrete evidence is available to prove that it can eliminate body toxins. You have to understand that this cannot guarantee or sustain weight loss. Juice fasting may not be as helpful as you expect it to be. This works like any carb-restricting craze diet, you will lose your water weight during the cleanse, but it will come back later.

Juice cleanse is not just time-consuming to prepare, it is costly as well. You have to keep going back to the grocery. Pre-made juices may cost you more than $50 per individual orders.

You can try out these juices if it’s the desire of both your body and mind. But make sure it is customized to fit your real needs, emotionally and physically. Discuss it with you doctor before doing it, so that he or she can help you find the best one for you.
